Myth: Only Married Couples Need To Go To Therapy

One persistent assumption about couples therapy is that individuals should only utilize this option if they are in a married relationship. In reality, there are many benefits for couples who are in committed relationships but are not married to undergo this type of therapy. For example, individuals may find that they have previous trauma or experiences that are causing them to adopt damaging tendencies in their relationship, and this can be compounded if their partner has similar issues. Myth: Couples Therapy Is Always Conducted In A Group Session

Another assumption that is often held about couples therapy is that these sessions will always be in a group setting with both partners present. This will be an important type of therapy session, but it is also common for these therapists to want to periodically meet with the individuals separately. This can allow for a more frank and robust discussion about their issues with the relationship so that the therapist can tailor their approach to meet the concerns that both partners have in the relationship. Myth: Couples Therapy Will Always Save A Relationship

While a couples therapist will strive to help their clients to learn the skills that are needed to help foster a healthier relationship, it is important to note that these results will vary from one couple to the next. For some couples, the differences between them may simply be too great to overcome. However, going through the therapy process can help those partners have the confidence that they tried their best to salvage the relationship, which can also help to increase the chances of both parties feeling better regardless of the actual outcome. Unfortunately, those that fail to undergo this type of therapy may find that their relationship has almost no chance of succeeding without first addressing the serious issues that are leading to conflict, trust, or intimacy problems between the partners.
